The Controller will have to maintain a clear view of the big picture, and support scalable, efficient processes that can be measured and improved as the organization expands, while working with the team to get the books closed on time. The best candidates will be able to tell us how they use financial and operational data to understand the business, communicate challenges, and drive continual improvement.
Controller initial focus will be on financial statements and state compliance, learning payroll process, followed by variance analysis (learning the business!). You will partner with CFO to learn our systems and processes.
Principal Accountabilities
Financial Transactions
- Produce complete, timely, and accurate financial statements, variance analysis
- Maintain accurate12-week cash flow forecast
- Oversee compliance reporting for payroll taxes, insurance, benefits, 401k, in conjunction with outside payroll processor provide and benefits providers
- Maintain a system of internal controls over accounting transactions
Management
- Provide managerial accounting reporting and dashboards/KPIs to get information to the right level of the organization, to make great decisions
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls, reduce non-value added work and increase efficiency and effectiveness
- Manage and develop team including Staff Accountant, Administrative Assistant
- Identify the right timing to add new resources as we grow
Reporting
- Issue timely and complete financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Monitor performance vs internal targets; provide scorecard metrics
- Prepare financial reports for internal use (the Board, lenders, investors)
- Analyze variances from the budget and forecasts, and report significant issues to management
Compliance
- Maintain books and records that would hold up to audit scrutiny (we are not yet audited but want to be audit ready)
- Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Manage weekly timesheet reviews and payroll processing (WorkforceGO!)
- Support 401k reporting, financial portion of benefits administration, insurance renewal
- Maintain Company qualifications in customer compliance systems (Avetta, Compliworks, ISNet) in partnership with Safety Manger and Operations
Systems used:
Sage Intacct (Accounting), Office 365, MS Dynamics (CRM), Sharepoint, WorkforceGO! (HRIS), heavy use of Excel for dashboard reporting, some powerpoint.
Requirements
The Controller candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations. Experience in the construction industry, with Percentage of Completion accounting helpful but not required. Demonstrated ability to run projects and deliver results. Must be team player who is able to analyze data, draw conclusions and communicate across the organization.
Working Conditions
Primarily in an office environment, to enhance collaboration. This position qualifies for 1 day/week remote work. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.
